The Seven Nights of Winter

This is my Celtic celebration of the Winter Solstice, December 21st. As the number 7 was sacred, I'm offering to you, dear reader, seven poems. Each day, I'll add a new one until the  21st.

Light of my eyes,

Breath of my soul,

Sun of my heart,

Flame of my days.

Your affection,

Warms me again.

Oh, powerful sun, essence of our lives,

Bestow your rays upon the freezing world!

We need your justice balanced by mercy

And powered by unconditional love.

Solas mo shúl,

Anáil m'anama,

Grian mo chroí,

Lasair mo laethanta.

Tá do ghrá ag cur teasa orm arís.

Ó, a ghrian chumhachtach, croílár ár saoil, Bronn do ghathanna ar an domhan reoite!

Teastaíonn do cheartas uainn, cothrom le trócaire

Agus faoi thiomáint ag grá neamhchoinníollach.

You’re my sun and my stars,

My moon and my heart.

You’re my first and my last,

My very future and my past.

You’re my darkness and my light,

My secret and my pride.

You’re my soul and my heart,

My only flame shining bright.

Is tusa mo ghrian agus mo réaltaí,   Mo ghealach agus mo chroí.

Is tusa mo chéad agus mo cheann deireanach,

Mo thodhchaí agus mo stair.

Is tusa mo dhorchadas agus mo sholas,

Mo rún agus mo bhród.

Is tusa m'anam agus mo chroí,

Mo lasair amháin ag lonrú go geal.

Your kindness

Stole my breath away.

And all my smiles,

I keep for you to stay.

My sun, my glorious fire,

Warm my heart as before.

With a touch of love,

And a brush of heat,

You must retain

The ancient gods’ main seat.

Snow and ice

Trickle into rain

And I miss again

The blue of your eyes.

Summer dreams

Seem like aeons ago.

And I miss you so

The beauty of your soul.

Do chineáltas

Ghoid m'anáil uait

Coinním mo gháire duit

Ag súil go bhfanfaidh tú le mo thaobh.

Mo ghrian, mo thine ghlórmhar,

Téann sí mo chroí mar a bhí roimhe.

Le teagmháil ghrá,

Agus scuab teasa,

Coinníonn tú

Príomhshuíochán na ndéithe ársa.

Sneachta agus oighear

Sileadh isteach sa bháisteach

Agus caillim arís

Gorm do shúl.

Brionglóidí samhraidh

Is cosúil le mílte bliain ó shin.

Agus caillim thú chomh mór

Áilleacht d'anama.

You are the light

You are my future

You're my heart

And my essence.

Your flame

Burns the brighter

In the darkest of nights.

Your voice echoes

On the mountainside

As the song of the wind.

I love you so,

From close and afar

And I yearn for your face

As much as before.

41123_edited.jpg

Is tusa an solas,
Is tusa mo thodhchaí,
Is tusa mo chroí
Agus mo bhunús.

Do lasair
Loiscíonn níos gile
Sna hoícheanta is dorcha.

Macallaíonn do ghlór
Ar thaobh an tsléibhe,
Mar amhrán na gaoithe.

Is breá liom tú go buan,
Ó chian agus ó ghar,
Agus is fada liom uaim d’aghaidh,
Mar a bhí riamh cheana.

41131.jpg
41129.jpg

I’ve created you
from sunrays, memories, and love—
And you pulled me from the darkness
with dreams of the future,
Sweetness and love.

Two halves of the whole,
lost and recovered
Through aeons of time.

My darling,
You are a wonder to behold,

Dear to my heart,
My most prized treasure,
My friend and my soul—
My most beloved.

41131_edited.jpg

Chruthaigh mé thú
ó ghathanna gréine, ó chuimhní, agus ó ghrá—
agus tharraing tú mé ón dorchadas
le brionglóidí na todhchaí,
le binneas agus grá.

Dhá leath den iomlán,
caillte agus aimsithe arís
trí aoiseanna an ama.

A mhuirnín,
is iontas thú le feiceáil,
daor do mo chroí,

Mo thaisce is luachmhaire,
mo chara agus m’anam,
mo ghrá geal.

My love for you

Overflows like a mighty river.

Carved by time itself.

You remain etched in the Universe -

A flame rising from the ashes

Born of starlight and hope.

You walk through the halls of eternity -

Permanent and mutable as crystal -

The light chasing the terrors of the night.

O, majestic Sun, my glorious heart,

Share your bounty back.

Melt the sadness freezing my soul.

Free me from the shackles of winter.

Mo ghrá duit
Ró-shníonn sé mar abhainn mhór,
Snoite ag an am féin.

Tá tú greanta sa Chruinne go deo —
Lasair ag éirí as an luaithreach,
Rugtha de sholas na réaltaí agus d’íonacht.

Siúlaíonn tú hallaí na síoraíochta —
Buan agus so-ghluaiste mar chriostal.

Solas glan ag ruaig scáth na hoíche.

A Ghrian mhaorga, a chroí ghlórmhar,
Roinn do fhlaithiúlacht liom arís.

Leáigh an brón atá ag reo m’anama.
Scaoil saor mé ó shlabhraí an gheimhridh.

Caught between the earth and the sky,

Captive of the fury of waves

Adoptive son of the sea

Your glory remains unretained!

Shining, blazing and might

At the simplest sight

Of your rays piercing my soul

I belonged to you,

My glorious sun!

Gafa idir an talamh agus an spéir,

I mbraighdeanas ag feirg na dtonnta Mac uchtaithe na farraige

Fanann do ghlóir gan choinneáil!

Ag lonrú, ag lasadh agus ag neart

Ag an radharc is simplí

De do ghathanna ag tolladh m'anama Ba leatsa mé, Mo ghrian ghlórmhar!
